4 HVAC Sounds You Should Never Ignore

It’s normal for the HVAC system in your Dallas, Texas, home to click on and hum when it operates. However, if the system makes other sounds, you may have a problem.

If you hear grinding, hissing, rattling, or buzzing, it’s important to determine the cause of the HVAC sounds and have any problems fixed as soon as possible.

Grinding

Grinding sounds indicate that your HVAC’s moving parts are out of alignment and no longer working correctly. If you hear them, turn the system off, wait a few minutes, and turn it back on. If the noise persists, turn it off again and call an HVAC service provider. The problem could be as simple as a worn belt or as complex as a motor issue.

Hissing

When your system is working well, it should hum softly when it operates. If the hum turns into a hiss, similar to the sound of air leaking from a tire, something is wrong.

A common cause of hissing sounds is a refrigerant leak, which is a serious issue, so it’s important to turn off the system and have it inspected.

Rattling

Rattling sounds have a variety of causes, ranging from something as easy to fix as a loose cabinet door or as difficult to manage as a loose interior part. If it’s an easy fix, such as a few loose screws on a cabinet door, go ahead and tighten them yourself.

If you can’t figure out where the rattling sound is coming from, get help. The sooner you get the issue resolved, the less damage your ac unit will experience.

Buzzing

Buzzing sounds can have a variety of causes, from broken interior components to loose wiring. They can also come from something as simple to remedy as a dirty air filter. If you hear buzzing, change your filter first.
